Chapter 1
· Getting started
What Skaleton is
A pad grid where every scale has the same shape. Here’s the idea in two minutes.
[screenshot: grid + rings]
Skaleton is an isomorphic MIDI controller and instrument for iPad, in landscape. Isomorphic means one thing: a pattern you learn once works everywhere. A major chord has the same shape in C as in F♯. A melody in Dorian keeps its shape when you move it.
You pick a root and a skale (our word for scale) on two rings. The grid then only gives you notes that fit. Or, if you prefer, it shows all twelve and mutes the ones outside the skale.
Two ways to make sound
As a controller: send MIDI to any DAW or synth via a Mac or PC, over USB, WiFi or Bluetooth.
As an instrument: Skaleton Sound plays wavetable instruments through the iPad speaker or headphones. No computer, no cables.
What you’ll find on screen
The grid takes most of the screen. Around it sit the root and skale rings, the CUE column with your saved Builds, two joysticks and a slim settings rail. The next chapter walks through each part.
Tip: you don’t need to know any theory to start. Pick a skale, keep your fingers on the lit pads, and everything you play will fit.
